Tutorial
1.Adjusting the pattern and draw neckband pattern piece
You can skip this step if you are already working with a V-neck pattern.
Take your front bodice pattern piece and hold it in front of you.
Indicate how deep you would like the V-neck to be.
Draw the V-neck onto your pattern piece and cut out.
Measure your V-neck and the neckline of the back together.
Take 85% of the circumference if you are working with the t-shirt fabric itself, 75% if you are working with ribbing, and don’t forget your seam allowance.
That will be the width of your pattern piece.
As the height, take 5 to 6cm for a finished neckband of 1.5 to 2cm high.
Draw your rectangle to the correct dimensions:
Draw on 1 side (not at the fabric fold) about 2cm inward of the pattern piece.
Ready to cut out your pattern pieces!
2. Front and back neckline notches
Indicate center back neckline with a small clip within the seam allowance.
Draw the seam allowance of your V-neck onto the front pattern piece (at the wrong side of the fabric).
3. Preparing and attaching the neckband
Indicate the center of the neckband with small clips.
Fold neckband in half, right sides facing and pin.
Stitch seam.
Clip the V until right before your stitches.
Press seam open.
Fold and press in half again, wrong sides facing.
This way you’ll get a tunnel.
Cut off excess pieces of fabric.
Mark the notch for the V-neckline:
To do this, draw lines at the back of your neckband 1cm from the edge to where they intersect in the V.
Pin neckband to neckline.
The unfinished sides of the neckband align with the raw edge of the neckline.
Start pinning at center back towards the V-neck.
Pin V-neck notch of neckband to V-neck notch of neckline.
Stitch from center back towards the V using a stretch stitch.
Finish exactly in the V-neck notch with your needle down.
Gently pull the neckband while stitching.
Leave your needle down, lift up presser foot and turn V-neck towards you.
Clip in the V-neck of your shirt until right before your needle.
Turn your piece again, lower your presser foot and stitch the rest of the neckband into place.
If necessary, finish the seam with your overlock.
You can also topstitch the V-neck at the outside of your shirt 2mm from the edge.
Finished!
Happy sewing!
Kind regards,
Isabel
