Bernina launched a new throaty workhorse at Festival of Quilts 2014!

Bernina UK chose Festival of Quilts to announce the debut of the latest in its range of top quality machines and add a new concept in long arm quilting. Using a specially modified frame for the show, the Q42 arrived in style. Demonstrated by Aggy Burczyk from Switzerland, the 24” throat between needle and body of machine gives ample space for the largest quilt. I was thrilled to see the Bernina Stitch Regulator, which governs the way this machine stitches, had been incorporated into the software screen. At a later stage, it will be compatible with a PC or a tablet for computerised designs as well – the possibilities seem endless now.

I had to have a play so I took hold of the controls at the front of the machine and before long I found I was stitching perfectly with complete control over the direction and speed of the needle. This machine comes with a ten foot frame too so it will accommodate the largest of quilts. The frame is beautifully made – sturdy, strong, yet elegant looking. With typical Swiss precision and engineering genius, this machine will be a serious contender in the long arm market. I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that the price will be around £11,000 – seriously competitive!

If you are in France in September or Holland in October, you will have a chance to see and experience the wonders of this beauty for yourself when it appears at the two largest mainland European shows in Alsace and Veldhoven.
