As a result of my Fine Arts studies at the University of Pretoria in the 1970’s, I am very design and colour orientated. I enjoyed designing and making my own clothes as well as clothes for two very fussy daughters.
We moved from Pretoria to Nelspruit during the early 1980’s. Here a friend and I started a small dress factory and shop where we designed, made and sold machine appliquéd cottage style dresses for moms and daughters. In the late 1980’s I broadened my creativity to include quilting. In the late 1990’s after the last child fled the nest, I took up my fine arts again and had a very successful solo exhibition of oil as well as pastel paintings in 2002.
Sewing and particularly quilting however remains my first love. I love to do creative machine appliqué and embroidery.
I completed the SA Quilters’ Guild Teachers Accreditation Course in 2014 and love to teach quilting as well as my own version of textile art.
I try to nurture a love and enthusiasm for fabrics and quilting with my pupils, to supply them with the “keys” to unlock their own creativity, to “stretch” their abilities and teach them good design principles. Being a colour lover, I also try to help them to understand the use of colour, which I find is often a problem with quilters.
