Making a fabric Christmas tree ball

Dear community,
in this blog post you can find easy instructions on how to make a fabric Christmas tree ball.

A fabric Christmas ball

Begin by choosing the fabrics you wish to work with. With GoodsToRemember I often work with recycled jeans, so I thought it would be nice to use them as the main material. But you can choose whatever you like. If the materials are really thin than I would strengthen them first with Vlieseline.

Due to the fact that I will use the circular embroidery attachment (Gerda has already written about this this year) nothing needs to be cut into shapes. This will save time 😉

Lay the patches on top of each other: The outer fabrics with the good sides on each other and on top of that the filling (in this case a thicker Vlieseline)

Now place it on the circular embroidery attachment.

Ensure that with the circular embroidery attachment you always use the attaching screw to feed over it. The red rubber cap prevents shifting.

First turn the fabric round on the needle to see whether it will reach everything when you start stitching.

Then stitch the circle onto the fabric.

Then cut the edge along the stitch and cut a groove in the middle of the fabric.

Now turn the fabric inside out, so that the good sides can be seen.

Make 8 circles like this

(I know…. you can only see 6 on the photo. Yes, mistakes are also made here 😉 I thought that 6 would be enough but that turned out not to be the case. I made another 2 later on.)

Place the circles on each other and stitch them together. Ensure that the grooves which you have cut fall onto each other under the stitching.

Now we proceed by hand. Stitch 2 patches together on 4 points of the circle: top, bottom, left and right.

Ensure that the thread cannot fall out of the needle by following this tutorial

When you have completed all points, proceed with stitching the sets together by stitching the points between the earlier stitches. I think the photo makes it clear(er)…

Now place a tape through the middle of the 8 circles (yes, I have now added the 2 circles :))

Now also stitch the points of the top and bottom patch together, in order that it is shaped like a ball.

You can also use textile glue as opposed to needle and thread. Fasten it securely while the glue dries.

And then the ball is ready!

Make it really special by using fabrics with a special memory.

Happy sewing!
