It’s finally here!!!! Welcome to the much-anticipated Swiss Star Quilt Along! I’m thrilled to embark on this creative journey with you, where we’ll be crafting a contemporary masterpiece using a classic star pattern.
In this inaugural blog post, we’ll delve into the exciting process of selecting fabrics that will bring your Swiss Star quilt to life.
The Vision: A Modern Twist on Tradition
About two years ago, I designed a quilt block inspired by wintertime sweaters, with a simple star in the middle. I used the block several times on social media, on my blog, etc. and to this day, it’s the most asked about block that I’ve ever posted.
When designing the Swiss Star Quilt Pattern, I know it had to include that gorgeous star. And I’m so excited to finally share the pattern with you!
Over the next 8 weeks, we’ll be making the Swiss Star Pattern together. Make the quilt top with me as we go. For those that finish the quilt top, you can enter a giveaway for the final prize generously sponsored by BERNINA: a BERNINA 570 QE Sewing Machine (open worldwide). You can join the raffle by sharing your finished quilt top on social media or in the community section before 15.05.2024! The full terms and conditions of the final raffle will be announced on May 1.
With a foundation in the timeless star pattern, we’re infusing a breath of fresh air with a modern color palette. Dark blue, gray, and off-white will work harmoniously to create a quilt that’s not only cozy but also visually stunning.
Picking Fabric Colors
For a modern twist on the Swiss Star quilt, consider mixing different fabric styles. Pair solid dark blue with a subtle gray pattern or an off-white with a modern geometric design.
Mixing prints and solids adds visual interest and depth to your quilt, making it truly unique.
I used the following fabrics for my quilt top: Moda Bella Solids: Navy Blue, Muslin Unbleached, Pewter
Fabric Requirements
To give you a head start on gathering your fabrics, below are the fabric requirements for the Swiss Star Throw Size.
This is a standard square sized quilt that is perfect draped on a sofa or bed.
Alternative Colors
Choosing colors for quilt designs often takes me the most time. It’s actually wild to think that out of the entire process (design and quilting), choosing the colors takes the longest!
Maybe a quilt therapist could delve more into why I am the way I am (probably something to do with my childhood I’m sure), but I’ve always felt that the colors made the quilt into what it is.
Below are some fun mockups to give you some inspiration on choosing your own beautiful fabrics.
Personalizing Your Palette: Adding a Pop of Color
While our primary palette consists of dark blue, gray, and off-white, don’t be afraid to introduce a pop of color to make your quilt uniquely yours. Consider adding a complementary hue in small doses—a vibrant yellow or a calming mint can create a stunning focal point within the modern star pattern.

I’m looking forward to participating in Swiss Star quilt along! It’s been raining in my neck of the woods, so it’s a perfect time to begin shopping for just the right fabrics for my quilt! The pattern is great and while these colors aren’t my normal choices, I am in the mood to widen my quilting horizons and move out of my comfort zone. Can’t wait to get started, and of course the opportunity to perhaps win a beautiful new Bernina has certainly caught my attention as well!
Looking forward!
I have just fallen in love with this pattern! I’ve already considered 3 separate colour pathways and debating with myself which I should do, if not all three. So timeless, and yet contemporary. Hats off to your designer!
