Advent, my favorite time of the year, is finally upon us! We love baking and cooking in our house, and the smell of cookies and gingerbread fills the air. We enjoy trying out lots of new recipes, but only the best make it into our “Golden Family Recipe Book”!
In the past few years, I have also sent just such a book to familiy and friends – sometimes blank, sometimes filled with our favorite recipes. A beautiful and personal gift that everyone will love!
Materials needed for a golden cookbook
All information always includes the required allowances. The material can be cut as indicated.
- 40.5 x 22 cm gold sewing cardboard
- 1 sheet of DIN A 5 paper
For the heart on the front:
- 7 x 7 cm felt 2 mm brown
- 7 x 7 cm red paper
For the tabs:
- 4 x 8 cm felt 2 mm brown
- 5 x 4 cm felt 2 mm orange
- 7 x 5 cm felt 2 mm green
- 6 x 3 cm felt 2 mm red
- 7 x 6 cm felt 2 mm gray
- 2 x 2 cm felt 2 mm white
- 4 x 4 cm red cotton material with dots
- 30 cm satin ribbon of each color: red, orange, light green, and gray

These parts will be needed:
- Red: 2 radishes
- Gray: 2 fishes
- Orange: 2 carrots
- Green: 1 of each green pieces 1-5
- Brown: 2 heart tabs, of which 1 has a hole and 1 is the front side of the heart with a hole
- Fold the short sides of the golden rectangle 5 cm towards the right side and the left side of the back of the sewing cardboard.
- Cut out the heart from the wool felt using the pattern. Cut out an additional heart (without a hole) from the red paper. This should be about 1 mm smaller than the felt heart. Write whatever you want on the paper and place it precisely in the middle under the wool felt heart. Now place this unit wherever you like on the front side of the book cover and stitch around it closely. Please be careful that the flap that was folded backward is not accidentally sewed as well!Finally, closely stitch the upper and lower edges of the gold cardboard to secure the tabs of the book cover. I pre-stitched the edge without thread with a good 3 mm stitch length and then put holes in the hearts by hand using a loop stitch. And voila! Hand-sewn stitches that are perfect and even! For the record, I used Mettler’s ‘Extra Strong’ thread.
Sewing Instructions for the Bookmark
- Fish: Use a hole punch to cut out the eyes from the white felt, then sew by hand onto the gray fishes (like a mirror image!). Then sew the fish together by hand using small loop stitches around the edges. The gray satin ribbon will be caught on the fish’s mouth.
- Radishes & Carrot: Place two orange/red pieces precisely on top of one another and sew the matching green parts and the orange/green satin ribbon onto the upper edge.
- Cookie: Cut a heart out of the cotton material that is approx. 1 mm smaller than the one from the wool felt. Then lay both felt hearts (with and without a hole) on top of one another, place the cotton material in the middle, with the extended side showing on top and through the hole. Sew the heart pieces together by hand around the edge. The red satin ribbon can be sewn on anywhere.
- The length of the ribbons can be shortened as you like. Glue the ends not attached to the felt pieces onto the upper edge of the book cover.
