Welcome to the 23rd door of the BERNINA Blog Advent Calendar. I have created a little Danish Christmas decoration for you. These are white hearts made from vegan cactus leather that are embroidered with pretty red decorative stitches. The hearts are hung up with a cord or a wire on which I also thread a few small beads. These hearts can be tied into the parcel bow or hung on fir branches or the Christmas tree as decorative elements. They are sewn very quickly; if you fancy this project, you can do it just before Christmas Eve!
Sewing Danish Christmas Hearts – Instructions
Material supplies for Danish Christmas hearts
- Cactus leather remnants in white
- Vliesofix
- Red polyester sewing thread
- Punch pliers
- Wire for stringing the hearts up
- Small beads as embellishment
Preparing the cactus leather
Set the iron to polyester temperature. Iron a layer of Vliesofix onto the back of the cactus leather and let it cool thoroughly.
Then peel off the backing paper from the Vliesofix.
Now lay the material wrong side on wrong side on top of each other and place a layer of parchment paper over it. Then carefully iron both parts together.
Now draw hearts on the white cactus leather either freehand with a pencil or using a template. Cut them out with sharp scissors. You can paint the edges with a red alcohol pen, acrylic pen or leather edge paint. It’s a beautiful eye-catcher when the hearts on the tree move slowly. Then use the punch pliers to pierce an opening approx. 7 mm below the top center.

Now the Christmas hearts are given a red outline. The most suitable presser feet for edging these small objects are the Straight Stitch Foot with Non-Stick Sole #53 or the Blindstitch Foot #5
Select the triple stitch and outline each heart.
Your BERNINA offers a large number of beautiful decorative stitches. I tried out a few of them on a piece of leftover leather and also varied the size. Take a note of the stitch number.
Then embroider the Christmas hearts one by one.
Finally, string the heart on the cord or the wire. I used jewelry wire, but other thin threads and cords are just as suitable. If you like it, you can add a few beads to the heart. They sparkle particularly beautifully in the Christmas lights.
Have fun creating the Danish Christmas hearts.
I wish you wonderful holidays with your loved ones and friends, treat yourselves and have a great time.
Sincerely,
Jutta
