Greet the New Year with a big Hello! If your New Year’s resolution is to sew more with your serger and cover machine, then you could practice a little with this month’s free pattern, the shirt “Finja”. You can download the pattern and embroidery design until January 31, 2024 in the paragraph “Download the free sewing pattern for the shirt “Finja” (January only)”. As always, you’ll have to be quick because each pattern is only available for free download in the month stated.
Sewing the shirt “Finja”
Embroider first! Knitted fabrics can be tricky to hoop. One method is to use a self-adhesive and water-soluble stabilizer called “Solufix”. Hoop a layer of Solufix in the embroidery hoop, remove the backing paper and stick the fabric on, while being careful not to stretch the fabric in any direction. Stick on another layer of Solufix and secure the layers with the basting function. You can achieve great embroidery results on knitted fabrics with this Solufix “sandwich” method. We used blue metallic thread and Madeira Spectra Holographic thread to make our embroidery extra sparkly. Loosen the thread tension, reduce the embroidery speed and/or use a metafil needle to prevent your special thread from breaking.
The shirt itself is sewn very fast! Hem the outer edges of the flounce with a narrow 2-thread flatlock stitch. This stitch is a lot less bulky than an overlock stitch, which means your flounce will be a lot softer. Sew all pieces together with a 4-thread overlock stitch, hem the shirt and the sleeves with a coverstitch and you are already done! The shirt “Finja” is a great pattern for getting back into working with the serger and the coverstitch machine.
