Embroider a wreath of hearts for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day will soon be there and it’s time to make a project with hearts. My suggestion? Embroider a wreath of hearts for Valentine’s Day

On social media I noticed an invitation to make something for an unknown sewist. It’s called ‘Secret Valentine’s gift project’. I subscribed as soon as I could. Isn’t it fun and surprising? To surprise someone and to get something in return! As I planned to make a Valentine cushion, I thought to send this person a heart-decorated cushion.

And after this first one, I will keep on making them for all the friends I have been missing for a long time. I think they will appreciate a little gift after a bad time.

The size for the file in EXP are 20 x 26 cm. For the other embroidery formats, it could depend on the hoop size.

It takes about 20 minutes to embroider.

The hearts have a ripple fill. Look what a beautiful effect, with a minimum stitch count.

Copying the hearts and positioning in a garland was made up with ‘Mirror-Merge’, selecting ‘Wreath’.

The letters line up along a curved path, selecting ‘Circle CCW’ . Find this option in Object properties for Text.

I lowered stitch density, because I am going to embroider it with sewing thread Seracycle (0,47 instead of 0,45). When you embroider this file with standard embroidery thread, you could have the impression that the density is not OK.

Supplies for a cushion with a wreath of hearts:

  • Middle- or heavy weight fabric 40 cm x 86 cm (seam allowance and a fold for the button closing is included)
  • 2 buttons
  • Cut away stabilizer
  • A filling cushion 39 x 39 cm
  • Mettler Seracycle: I chose to use sewing thread instead of embroidery thread, because it gives a better view for this open ripple fill.
  • I made the cushion on the embroidery machine BERNINA 700 and the sewing machine BERNINA 710

How to make the embroidered cushion:

This file is great for beginners too. You embroider on firm fabric, with good stabilizer. There’s only one colour. There are no extra actions for which you should take away the embroidery hoop from the machine.

Embroider the pattern in the middle of the fabric. It takes about 20 minutes.

When finished, you take the fabric out of the hoop and cut away the excess of stabilizer on the back.

Measure 38 cm in the middle of the fabric (over full fabric width) and be sure the embroidery file is in the middle of this area. Fold edges over and iron. Now fold the open edges over, to have an overlap of 3 cm on both sides.

Turn the cushion inside out and sew with a 1 cm seam allowance. Overlock the sideseams.

Turn the cushion again, to have the right side out. Mark the position for the buttonholes.

Measure the buttons, set the buttonhole size and sew the buttonholes in the cushion.

Cut the buttonholes open.

Sew the buttons to the cushion with Button-sew-on foot # 18 or handsew them to the cushion.
