Hello BERNINA Lovers!
A few weeks ago the BERNINA team told me they were about to release a BERNINA Crystal Edition with Swarovski® crystals and they asked whether I wanted to try their Inspiration Kit in my BERNINA 570 QE. What do you think my answer was? Well, you’ve guessed correctly! The theme of the blog for the second half of the year is “Time to shine!”. Would you like to see the three new BERNINA machines? You will find all information about the BERNINA Crystal Edition here:

BERNINA Inspiration Kit
The Inspiration Kit comes with a variety of Swarovski Crystals, in different sizes and shapes. My faves are the buttons! I look forward to making a blouse to use them! The Kit also includes 2 special Presser Foot, the Edgestitch Foot #10 and the Button Sew-On Foot #18 – one to sew buttons and another one that allows you to sew straight on a line following the edge of the fabric.
And last but not least, the kit offers also a USB stick with 300 embroidery designs. I haven’t yet used it, but I have checked all the designs and they are great!

New version of my YMMD Cap
I knew straight forward what pattern I was going to use to use the Swarovsky Crystals…
Right after receiving the good news about being able to try the Inspiration Kit I decided to make a new version of my YMMD Cap, a pattern I released a couple of months ago. I have made quite a few of these caps, for me and for some friends but I wanted to make a new version of it for autumn. I have a black corduroy fabric and a beautiful Liberty fabric.
I thought that the Swarovski crystals would look terribly beautiful on top of the black corduroy fabric.
Before starting to sew the cap I tried different designs with the crystals on the fabric:
Using the small triangles
I decided to create some shapes using the small triangles and the tear shaped crystals to see how they would look like. I even asked my followers on Instagram (if you want to follow my account click here https://www.instagram.com/you_made_my_day_patterns/)
I wanted something not too big, but still visible to give that special touch to my YMMD Cap. I came down to 2 designs, so I placed them on the cap to see the final look.
After listening to the advice received on Instagram, I decided to do the crystal flower using the tear shaped crystals.
Sewing the cap
I then started sewing the cap, first the outer fabric (the black corduroy), then the lining in the beautiful Liberty fabric.
Before assembling the outer and lining caps I hand sew the crystals making the flower shape. I have to be honest and tell you that I tried sewing the crystals using the Button Sew-On Foot (I am a lazy hand sewer haha) but since the crystals are quite thick and their ply is not even, the stitch doesn’t look as nice as when you sew buttons with that footer. So I had to hand sew the crystals.
I also tried the Edgestitch Eoot as it allowed me to top stitch the seams of my outer fabric to give it a nice look and keep them in place.
Once the crystal flower was hand-stitched I just had to assemble the two pieces together and finish the cap. Very simple, yet stunning!
I really like how my cap looks, it is so unique I love it!
What do you think?
I already want to make more using other crystals and the embroidery designs that I have spotted in the USB stick.
